7 Rad - is a visual exploration of how urban landscapes are transformed at night, depicting the grandeur, complexity and curiosity of a man-made environment.
In 2020, I returned to my homeland, the Netherlands, and started a mentorship with Magnum to deepen my exploration of large-format landscape photography. During the winter months, I was struck by the brightness of the Dutch skies at night—surprisingly more luminous than those over megacities like New York and São Paulo where I used to live.
My curiosity led me to analyze NASA/NOAA VIIRS satellite data, through which I confirmed that the Netherlands emits some of the highest levels of artificial light at night (ALAN) globally, far exceeding averages seen in other OECD countries. This discovery inspired me to capture the intricate interplay of light and darkness within urban settings, framing the grandeur of modern life alongside the complex relationship between human constructs and the natural world.
